Game Wraps, May 30, 2008

We are heading toward the end of the second month of the International League season. Here are the results of games played last night...

The PawSox find themselves back in third place in the IL North after the Syracuse Chiefs took over second place with a 7-0 shutout of the Norfolk Tides. BOX

Meanwhile first place Scranton/Wilkes Barre remains atop the division after coming from behind to beat the Rochester Red Wings 6-3. Eric Duncan had a homer and drove in three. BOX

The Columbus Clippers collected 13 hits, on their way to a 7-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons. BOX

The Louisville Bats opened up a 5-0 lead and hung on to defeat the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, 5-3. BOX

It took ten innings, but the Richmond Braves upended the Charlotte Knights on the road, 6-4. BOX

The Toledo Mud Hens continue to struggle, falling to the Indianapolis Indians, 3-2. BOX

Johnson & Johnson Do in PawSox, 10-6

Durham's Dan and Elliot Johnson each homered and drove in three runs as the Bulls out scored the PawSox 10-6 last night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Dan Johnson (3 for 4) hit his two-run homer off PawSox starter Clay Buchholz in the third. Elliot Johnson (no relation, 2 for 3) also hit a two-run shot, off reliever and game loser Edgar Martinez (1-1). It came in the bottom of the seventh when the Bulls scored three times to break open a 5-5 tie.

Twice the PawSox fell behind only to come back and tie the score. But both times the Bulls had answers of their own.

Chris Carter continues his hot streak at the plate for Pawtucket. He went 2 for 3, with a homer and 2 RBIs. He now has a ten game hitting streak.

Sean Danielson found himself in the lead-off spot in place of Jeff Bailey, who was called up to Boston earlier in the day. Danielson took advantage of the opportunity, banging out three hits and driving in a run. Brandon Moss also belted a solo homer for the PawSox. Keith Ginter drove in a PawSox run with a sacrifice fly.

Jed Lowrie made his return to the PawSox line-up, batting third and playing shortstop. He finished his day 1 for 4 with a triple and a run scored.

Justin Ruggiano and Joel Guzman each had two hits and drove in a run for the Bulls. The other Durham RBI's came courtesy of Fernando Perez and Reid Brigniac.

Buchholz was shaky in his second rehab start with the Pawtucket. He threw 76 pitches over four innings. He gave up three runs on two hits, including a homer. More importantly it appeared his command was off, walking four and throwing a wild pitch. He also struck out five.

Durham starter Chris Mason pitched well but did not earn a decision. He pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Kurt Birkins (1-1) picked-up the win in relief.

Before the game the PawSox added OF Bobby Kielty back to their roster. The member of the Red Sox 2007 championship squad had been sidelined since April 19th with a left hand injury, which eventually required surgery. Kietly had been in rehab at Single A Lancaster where he went 2 for 8 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's in three games.

Game two of the four game series with the Bulls is tonight (7:05 pm) with RHP David Pauley (6-2, 3.09) starting for Pawtucket against RHP Jeff Niemann (2-1, 1.71) for Durham.

Masterson, Bailey Lead PawSox over Yankees, 5-2

PAWTUCKET- Justin Masterson’s pitching and Jeff Bailey’s hitting led the PawSox over the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees 5-2 tonight at McCoy. The win earned the PawSox a split of their four game series and put them only one game behind the Yankees in second place in the IL North Division.

The lanky right hander (1-0) had command of all his pitches, throwing six complete innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out four and walked one. He also hit a batter. The two runs off Masterson came on a wild pitch to score Justin Christian in the third and a two out error by Joe Thurston, plating Jason Lane, in the fourth.

“It didn’t take more than an inning or so to see the attraction” said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson of his young starter, “I don’t think we could have scripted this any better for his first Triple A outing.”

“I just wanted to do what I usually do…let my sinker work, get ground balls and let the great infielders I have field the balls” said Masterson. “I pretty much stuck to that game plan and got some ground balls.”

Masterson’s spot in the PawSox’ rotation was moved up two days in anticipation that he may be needed to make a spot start in Boston on Tuesday if Daisuke Matsuzaka is forced to miss his next turn due to shoulder stiffness.

I’m always ready to help out the team” Masterson said, “I’m just going to keep working and get ready for the next start."

Bailey hit two homers in the game, a two-run shot in the third and a solo homer in the eighth, giving him 16 for the year. His two-homer game was the third during this 8-game home stand. Before his blast in the third Bailey had been hitless in his last ten at bats.

“The last couple of games I wasn’t in a good position to hit” said Bailey . “I got my legs more involved tonight and kept my head still and that’s the key.”

Bailey, who has 13 home runs in the month of May, was not scheduled to be in the line-up but was inserted late as the DH.

“I was excited about getting the night off. I thought I needed the game off” said Bailey, “Whenever that happens and they throw guys in there late they have a good game.”

The PawSox scored in the bottom of the first on Chris Carter’s eighth homer of the season. With the hit Carter has now hit in nine straight games. Their fifth run also came in the eighth on an RBI single by Brandon Moss.

Scranton starter Dan McCutchen (0-2) was ejected with one out in the bottom of the fifth as he threw two consecutive pitches behind Bailey, no doubt in retaliation to Bailey’s homer in the third. Yankee Manager Dave Miley was also ejected for arguing with plate umpire Brian Kennedy.

Hunter Jones came in to relieve Masterson and pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. Chris Smith got the final two Yankee outs to secure his fifth save.

The PawSox now embark on an 8-game road trip beginning with the first of four games tomorrow night (7:05 pm) in Durham against the Bulls. Clay Buchholz (0-0, 2.25 ERA) will make his second PawSox start against Chris Mason (2-5, 4.71 ERA) for the Bulls.
BOX SCORE

NOTES: With the win the PawSox have the best home record in the IL at 21-9. That ties the best home record for the PawSox after 30 games in franchise history. Pawtucket was also 21-9 in the 1977 season. The PawSox will have 16 home games in June opposed to 14 on the road.
David Pauley, who was slated to start tonight, will pitch Saturday night in Durham. Charlie Zink and Kyle Snyder are also scheduled to pitch for the PawSox against the Bulls.

Yankee Manager Dave Miley was also ejected arguing Kennedy's call.

What a difference two games make. Two days ago the PawSox were tied with the Yankees for first place in the IL North Division. Following back-to-back losses the PawSox find themselves in third place, two games out of first and 1/2 game behind Syracuse for second place.

Justin Masterson makes his PawSox debut tonight. He was slated to start Saturday in Durham but was moved up with the speculation he may be needed to pitch for the Red Sox on Tuesday if Daisuke Matsuzaka is unable to make his next start with shoulder stiffness.

PawSox Manager Ron Johnson is looking forward to Masterson's debut.

"I saw two innings in the first two days of Major League Spring Training. The only other times I’ve seen him was on TV. It should be exciting." said Johnson.

Masterson has been with the team for about a week and has blended in extremely well.

"He’s probably the nicest guy I’ve ever met. He makes you feel better hanging out with him," said Johnson. "When these guys go up there to the big league club, it’s there responsibility to blend in to be part of that culture. When you’ve got a guy that understands things..its real good."

Masterson has made two appearances with Boston this season. In those games he was 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA. In those games he struck out nine and walked seven. He has also had eight starts with Double A Portland. In those starts Masterson was 1-3 with a 4.23 ERA.

Elsewhere with the pitching staff Johnson said it's important for the PawSox bullpen to not get too discouraged over their performance the last two games,

"We’re playing the best team in the league. They’ve had they’re way with us" Johnson said, "When they have two or three days when they struggle its all about how they rebound."

On the injury front Johnson said Jed Lowrie took batting practice from both sides of the plate today and looks ready to rejoin the PawSox line-up in the next day or so. Reliever Lee Gronkiewicz, who has been sidelined since May 1st, has had another MRI on his ailing right elbow. His status is still up in the air.

Jeff Bailey was slated to have the day off but was a last minute addition to the line-up at DH. He has been in a rut as of late, going hitless in his last nine at bats.

Chris Carter enters the game with a 8 game hitting streak, over which he is hitting .531 with 4 homers and 7 RBI. He now leads the team with a .318 batting average.

Check back as I will be providing periodic updates every few innings.

Yankees Edge PawSox in Slugfest, 9-8

PAWTUCKET- The PawSox’ surrendered their lead atop the IL North Division...but not without a fight. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees broke out the bats early, and hung on to earn a 9-8 win over Pawtucket tonight at McCoy. With the loss the PawSox dropped back to second place in the IL North Division, one game behind SWB.

Down at one point 8-0, the PawSox came back to make it a game, but their early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

“There’s good and there’s bad” said PawSox skipper Ron Johnson, “The bad part was we gave up too many runs. The good part was how we battled back. We spotted them too many runs”

PawSox starter Kyle Snyder made his first start since coming off the disabled list with a right groin strain. His return was a memorable one, but not in a good way. He lasted only 1 2/3 innings in taking the loss, giving up five runs on three hits. He walked three, struck out one, and hit two batters. He threw 54 pitches, only 26 for strikes.

Snyder's second inning was not much better. With one out Gardner walked and stole second. After Gonzalez grounded to first, Lane walked. Broussard then drove a two-run double to right center, ending Snyder's night.

“The good part is I don’ think (Snyder) has any problem with himself physically” said Johnson, “We know that if he doesn’t have any problems with him physically, it’s gonna get a lot better than we saw tonight.”

Michael Tejera relieved Snyder and gave up three runs of his own.. In the third Christian and Nick Green reached on singles. After a Chris Stewart sacrifice bunt, Bernie Castro drove in Christian with a single.

In the fourth the Yankees struck for two more. Three straight doubles by Lane, Broussard, and Ransom gave SWB an 8-0 lead.

The PawSox got to Scranton starter Dan Giese in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs, courtesy of a two-run homer to right by Joe Thurston and a Grand Slam by Dusty Brown.

Pawtucket cut the Scranton lead to one with RBI singles by Keith Ginter in the fifth and George Kottaras in the sixth sandwiched around a Ransom RBI hit in the top of the sixth for the Yankees.

Billy Traber (1-0) got the win for the Yankees in relief. Scott Patterson picked up the save.

Broussard, playing his first game with the Yankees, was 3 for 4, with 3 RBI’s. Christian also drove in three for SWB.

Chris Carter continues to swing a hot bat, going 3 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to seven games and raise his batting average to .313.

After the game the PawSox sent pitcher Miguel Asencio back to Portland.

Game three of the series is tomorrow night (7:05 pm) as Kei Igawa (3-4, 3.83 ERA) starts for SWB. He’ll be opposed by Davern Hansack (2-5, 5.55 ERA) for the PawSox.

As bad as the Yankees have been of late, the PawSox have been on fire. They have won 15 of their last 19 and are tied for the IL North lead. With a win the PawSox would find themselves alone atop the division for the first time since the first week of the season (April 10th). So far in 5 games against SWB this season the PawSox are 4-1.

With yesterday's 11-5 win the PawSox have now scored back-to-back in double digits for the first time this year and the first time since July of 2005.

Snyder makes his first start since being placed on the disabled list with a right groin strain. He left his last start with the injury after completing only 3 innings. His last win came May 7th against Indianapolis (12-7 PawSox victory). Manager Ron Johnson says Snyder will be limited to 60-65 pitches in his return.

The PawSox pitching staff is now tops in the International League. Their team ERA of 3.28 is .06 better than the Yankees. Offensively the PawSox are tied for the IL lead in team batting average at .270.

Chris Carter enters the game with a 6 game hitting streak where he has batted .500 over that stretch with 3 homers and 6 RBIs.

It is currently raining at McCoy and the tarp is on the field. Unsure if the game will start on time. Either way, expect periodic updates throughout the night.

PawSox' Change in Fortune Not By Chance

PAWTUCKET- What a difference a year makes. It may sound cliché, but when it comes to the Pawtucket Red Sox 2008 season so far, the change in seasons has come with a change in fortunes.

Through 51 games, the PawSox are 31-20, the third best record in the International League. They are in second place, one game behind the Scranton Wilkes/BarreYankees in the IL North. One year ago the PawSox were ten games worse, at 21-30, and in last place in the division, eight games out.

So why the change? For starters, the PawSox 24-man roster looks a bit different than a year ago. Ten players currently on the squad also saw playing time in 2007. Only 4 positional players (Jeff Bailey, Brandon Moss, Chad Spann, and George Kottaras) played at least 70 games. On the pitching staff, only Davern Hansack and David Pauley spent most of the 2007 campaign at McCoy.

The influx of new players acquired during the off season has turned the PawSox’ luck around. The offense has been bolstered by the likes of newcomers outfielders Chris Carter (.308, 6 HR, 29 RBI) and Jonathan Van Every (.284, 7 HR 21 RBI). Bailey (.325, 12 HR, 37 RBI) and Moss (.286, 2 HR, 17 RBI) have been their consistent selves so far this year.

“Good players playing well” said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson on his team’s performance, “I’ve been very excited about it.”

The PawSox have also found some offensive production from some unlikely places, like behind the plate. Catchers Dusty Brown (.282, 3 HR, 11 RBI) and George Kottaras (8 HR, 28 RBI) have proven their worth to the organization as good receivers AND good hitters.

“That’s 11 home runs from behind the plate,” Johnson said, “That’s pretty good production from that position.” “Those two guys are both 40-man roster players. And both have a ton of ability.”

With Moss trying his hand at first base this season, it has been important for the rest of the PawSox infield to anchor that part of the field. And they have. Jed Lowrie, Gil Veazquez, Keith Ginter, and Chad Spann have all played solid defensively. Versatile Joe Thurston has spent time playing both infield and outfield positions.

“Jeff Bailey doing what he’s done...Gil Velazquez coming into the line-up and doing what he’s done… That’s a good team concept” said Johnson.

Pawtucket has also found production from younger players currently not with the team. Sandy Madera was the most notable, batting .303 with 4 homers and driving in 14 in just 23 games.

The PawSox’ success has come despite multiple roster moves made so far during this young season.

“The biggest thing I’m pleased with with this club is that we’ve had 9 people called up. We’ve had injuries,” said Johnson, “There’s been a lot of different cast of characters.”

On the mound, the PawSox have been bolstered by a solid starting rotation. Pauley has been the most impressive starter as evidenced by his 6-2 record. Charlie Zink is right behind, with a 5-2 mark and a 2.47 ERA. The rotation has also been bolstered this season by the experience of Kyle Snyder and the one start (so far) by Clay Buchholz. The future looks bright as prospect Justin Masterson is expected to enter the starting mix very soon.

The bullpen has been extremely consistent, despite injuries and promotions.

”When we lost (Craig) Hansen, (Bryan) Corey, (Lee) Gonkiewicz and (Chris) Smith. (Jose) Vaquedano, (Jon) Switzer, and (Eric) Hull picked up the load.” said Johnson.

The PawSox can be proud with what they’ve accomplished thus far. With most of the season still to come, the potential of what lies ahead will be interesting to follow.

Buchholz, PawSox, Handle Red Wings 11-1

PAWTUCKET- Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz was solid in his first rehab start for the PawSox, one of many positive signs to come out of Pawtucket’s 11-1 win over the Rochester Red Wings tonight before a sellout crowd at McCoy.

Buchholz felt good following his outing, the first since being placed on the 15-day DL with a broken nail on the middle figner of his right hand, suffered in a start May 12th at Minnesota.

“I felt good. I felt rested.” Buchholz said, “I got up in the zone early, was able to throw lower later. Overall it was a good game for me.”

Buchholz led off the game by walking Chris Basak. He was helped out by catcher Dusty Brown who threw Bsask out trying to steal second. Buchholz then settled down, getting Tommy Watkins to ground out to third and striking out Sergio Santos swinging.

In the second Buchholz got Brian Buscher to pop to short to start the inning. He then gave up a walk to Darnell McDonald. He finished the inning by forcing Garrett Jones to fly to tight and Randy Ruiz to pop up to the catcher.

Buchholz gave up a run in the third. With one out Jason Pridie laced a triple to right center. Basak drove him in with a single to right but was picked off trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Buchholz retired the side in order in the fourth striking out Santos and McDonald.

“After the fourth inning he had ten pitches left and he said, ‘let me use them.’’ said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson, “So it means he was feeling pretty good out there.”

Buchholz’ last batter was Garrett Jones, who led off the fifth with a double down the right field line. Hunter Jones came in to relieve Buchholz, retiring the side stranding Jones at second. Buchholz finished the game throwing 63 pitches, 38 for strikes. He gave up three hits, walking two and striking out three.

Buchholz’ future is still up in the air. He is scheduled to pitch again for Pawtucket Friday in Durham. It will be up to the Red Sox whether Buchholz will soon be returning to Boston or remain with the PawSox. The return of Bartolo Colon to the Boston rotation may go a long way in determining Buchholz’ fate.

“If I gotta stay (in Pawtucket) a little longer, so be it. I’ll be ready to go whenever they give me the call” Buchholz said.

The PawSox offense continues to thrive at home, banging out 11 hits. Chris Carter, Brandon Moss, Gil Velazquez, and Sean Danielson had two hits each for Pawtucket. Carter, Moss, and Dusty Brown homered. Brown and Danielson drove in three runs apiece.

The PawSox scored two runs in the bottom of the first on Carter’s sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot.

The PawSox scored two more runs run in the fourth. With one out Chad Spann struck out but made it all the way to second on a wild pitch by Brian Duensing. After Velazquez reached on an infield hit, Spann scored on a fielder's choice by Danielson. Danielson stole second and was driven home on a double to right center by Jeff Bailey.

Pawtucket scored four more times in the fifth, on a two run homer by Moss and a two-out, two run double by Danielson.

They added three more in the sixth on a three-run homer run onto the roof of the center field concession stand by Brown.

The PawSox are alone in second place in the IL North, one game behind Scranton Wilkes/Barre. The Yankees come to McCoy beginning with a holiday matinee (1:05pm) tomorrow. Jeff Karstens (0-1, 5.40 ERA) throws for SWB, opposed by Charlie Zink (5-2, 2.47 ERA) for Pawtucket.

The PawSox begin the day in second place in the IL North, 1.5 games behind Scranton Wilkes/ Barre. With a win the PawSox be only one game back with the Yankees coming to McCoy for a four game series beginning tomorrow afternoon.

Buchholz begins a 30 day rehab assignment with the PawSox tonight. This will be his first start since he was placed on the 15-day DL with a broken nail on his right middle finger suffered in his start against the Twins May 12th in Minnesota.

Buchholz will be limited to 4 innings or a maximum of 65 pitches.

"There's no expectations." said PawSox Manager Ron. Johnson, "He needs to get in there and get his work in. He's 100% with his finger."

Johnson said after tonight's start he will be re-evaluated by the Red Sox in consultation with the PawSox staff.

Johnson also gave the media an update on the injured PawSox. Relievers Lee Gronkiewicz and Lincoln Holdzkom are making progress although no decisions have been made on their return. Gronkiewicz has been on the disabled list since May 1st with a right forearm strain. Holdzkom was placed on the DL on May 17th with a right bicep strain.

The team is taking it slow with Jed Lowrie, who has been hobbled with a sore left wrist. Johnson said if need be Lowrie could play but will probably be left out of the line-up until the PawSox begins their next road trip in Durham next week.

One lost note from last night's 9-1 win...Jeff Bailey tied a PawSox record earning four walks in one game.

I'm at the game and will provide periodic updates and a complete report at game's end. If you are going to the game...enjoy the weather and the post-game fireworks!

It's Great to be Back

As much as it's nice to go away on vacation, it's also nice to be home. So now back on the PawSox beat!

A lot took place while I was away...new faces (Masterson, Asencio, Tavarez?, Moss on rehab, Buchholz to follow) and the team did well, closing the gap between themselves and first place Scranton.

Life at home will take my attention today. I hope to report from the ballpark either tomorrow night or Monday. Expect my regular reporting previews/stories/league wraps to resume either today or tomorrow.

Thanks for hanging in there!

While I'm Away

Writing this blog is a blast. But as I've mentioned in the past, it is an unpaid hobby. From time to time my life will keep me away from this endeavor. Such is the case for the next week as I will be enjoying some well deserved vacation time with my family.

I'm sure you all will be able to satisfy your PawSox fix without me. See you around Memorial Day!
