Six-Run Seventh Propels Knights Over PawSox, 9-3

The Charlotte Knights broke a 3-3 tie by scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on their way to a 9-3 win over the PawSox last night at Knight's stadium.

PawSox starter Davern Hansack (2-7) had put together a respectable outing through six innings but may have been stretched a bit too thin by going out to pitch the seventh.

The Knights Thomas Collaro and Fernando Cortez led the inning with singles. After Paul Phillips struck out, Jerry Owens hit a soft single to left to load the bases. Hansack then became a bit unsettled, forcing in a run on a wild pitch.

After Jason Bourgois walked, Hansack was replaced by Michael Tejera, who didn't fare much better. Danny Richar greeted Tejera with an RBI single. Then Brad Eldred walked to force in the Knight's fourth run of the inning. Josh Fields singled in run number five and Tejera plated the sixth on a wild pitch.

The Knights scored their other runs on a trio of solo home runs by Eldred (#20), Chris Getz (#6) and Cortez (#1).

Jeff Bailey came back to the PawSox from a brief stint with Boston by opening the game with solo homer, his 17th of the season. The other PawSox runs came courtesy of a Tomo Ohka wild pitch in the third and a Keith Ginter homer (#5) in the sixth.

Jed Lowrie and Dusty Broan had two hits apiece for the PawSox. Brandon Moss' double in the third extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Ohka, a former PawSox pitcher, pitched well but did not earn the win, hurling six innings giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out seven. That honor went to Charlotte reliever Adam Russell (3-0), who pitched a scoreless seventh.

Hansack's line: six innings, giving up seven runs on ten hits. He walked one, struck out six, and gave up three homers. Tejera gave up two runs on two hits in only 2/3 of an inning on the mound.

Game two of the four game set is tonight (7:15 pm). Clay Buchholz (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will make his third start of the season for Pawtucket against Charlie Haeger (3-4, 4.89 ERA) for the knights.

NOTES- Kyle Snyder was again placed on the disabled list with a sore groin. The PawSox activated Lincoln Holdzkom off the DL to fill the roster spot. Holdzkom had been off the field since May 17th with a right bicep strain.
