Moss Accepts New Assignment

PawSox outfielder/first baseman Brandon Moss received most of the attention at yesterday's Media Day at McCoy. Plans are for Moss to play much of the time at first base with spot duty in right field. Here are some of Moss's thoughts fresh off his opening stint with Boston in Japan...

On his assignment back to Pawtucket:

"They (Boston) had told me that the only way I would have a shot to make that team would be because of injuries. You gotta look at the guys around you on that team. There's no room for you. I knew they had plans for me to come back down here and play first base. I am perfectly fine with that."

On his move to first base:

"With a team like Boston, the opportunity to get the most at bats there is to get the most experience at a lot of positions. It will definitely help me get there."

On his adjustment to the time difference upon his return from Japan:

"In L.A. I had a hard time with it. I was going to bed at around 8eight o'clock in the morning and getting up around one or two. We got back here yesterday around seven in the morning and I slept from seven to six at night. I'm trying to get there but it's not even close to normal time."

On the fans in Tokyo:

"They're very knowledgeable. They know who everybody is. I'm nobody and people would come up to me looking for my autograph. They're very good fans. They love their players."

On his Opening Day homer:

"I told my roommates if I get an at bat I was going to try to go deep and get my first home run in Tokyo."

The 2008 International League Preview

My goal has been to try seek out as many individual previews of all the teams in the International League heading into the 2008 season. Some of these previews may actually be posted after the season begins. More on that in the coming days.

In the meantime, here is a comprehensive preview of the league from Minor League Baseball. There are other preview notes on the MiLB site. In the By The Numbers Column the PawSox are listed in a number of places...

2... Hits in the same inning in his Major League debut by Pawtucket Red Sox hitting coach Russ Morman on Aug. 3, 1986.
4...Consecutive seasons the Pawtucket Red Sox have topped the 600,000 mark in attendance.
7...Hits collected by new Charlotte hitting coach Joe McEwing against the Knights in 2007 as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox.
9...Runs scored by the Buffalo Bisons in the bottom of the ninth inning on May 5, 2007 to defeat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 15-14. The Bisons tied a modern-era team record by overcoming an eight-run deficit.
10...Years served as mayor of Pawtucket, R.I., by Thomas P. McCoy, for whom the Red Sox's stadium is named.
33...Home runs hit in 1997 by new Pawtucket Red Sox hitting coach Russ Morman to lead the International League.
36...States in which Pawtucket Red Sox pitching coach Rich Sauveur pitched during a 16-year professional career.
78...Runs driven in by Norfolk Tides manager Gary Allenson in 1978, when he was named IL Most Valuable Player.
In this piece about the IL celebrating its 125th Anniversary, there is an item about the 27 members to be inducted into the league's Hall of Fame. Among them are three prominent PawSox family members; owner Ben Mondor, former Manager Joe Morgan, and outfielder Jim Rice.

More from PawSox Media Day later.
