The Pawtucket Red Sox earned their franchise-record 84th win of the season as they edged the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, 2-1, last evening at McCoy. The win mark broke the old record of 83 wins set at the end of the 2003 season.
The PawSox scored all the runs they needed in the bottom of the third on a two run homer to right field by Joe Thurston, his 11th home run of the season.
PawSox starter Edgar Martinez (8-3) kept the Lehigh Valley bats in check, working six scoreless innings, giving up four hits in earning the win. He walked two and struck out five.
Hunter Jones surrendered the lone Iron Pigs run in his two innings on the mound. Beau Vaughan worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Andrew Carpenter (0-1) made his Triple A debut for the Iron Pigs and was the tough luck loser. He pitched seven innings, yielding Thurson's homer and five other PawSox hits. He walked three and struck out five.
The PawSox are now 14-1 against the Iron Pigs this season. The two teams close out the regular season when they play this afternoon (1:05pm) at McCoy. RHP Travis Minix (0-0, 4.50 ERA) pitches for Lehigh Valley. He'll be opposed by RHP Bartolo Colon (2-1, 2.45 ERA) for the PawSox.
NOTES: The Red Sox optioned RHP Michael Bowden back to Pawtucket. According to reports, Bowden will be sent to the bullpen to keep track on his innings in anticipation of his use in Boston later this season. To fill his spot, the Red Sox called up OF Jonathan Van Every. Van Every's services are needed because OF Coco Crisp has been out of the line-up with flu-like symptoms.
It will also be interesting to see how many other PawSox players will be called up when the Major League rosters all allowed to expand later today.
