PawSox Triumph in 10, 2-1

Jonathan Van Every broke-up a tie in the top of the tenth inning with a solo home run to lead the PawSox to a 2-1 extra-innings win over the Norfolk Tides tonight.

Van Every belted a 1-0 pitch deep to right off Tides reliever Jim Miller (2-3).

The Tides had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the tenth off PawSox reliever Michael Tejera. Omir Santos led the inning with a single and was replaced on the base paths by Mike McCoy. Chris Roberson reached on a failed double play grounder and was then picked off first as Tejera caught him attempting to steal second. Luis Hernandez then grounded out to third to end the game.

Before Van Every's heroics the game was dominated by solid pitching performances from both clubs. The PawSox' David Pauley again was extremely effective, throwing seven innings, giving up one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out seven. He gave up the Tides' lone run in the seventh on an RBI triple by Luis Terrero.

Justin Masterson pitched his second consecutive scoreless inning of relief in the eighth. Hunter Jones (5-2) benefited throwing a scoreless ninth by earning the win. Tejera picked up his second save.

Van Every (2 for 4) played a role in the PawSox scoring their first run in the third. Leading the inning Van Every hit a deep fly ball down the right field line off Norfolk starter Hayden Penn that was first ruled a homer then overruled and deemed foul. Pawtucket Manager Ron Johnson argued the call and was ejected from the game. Van Every eventually reached on a single. Penn then through a wild pitch to Jeff Bailey advancing Van Every to second. Bailey singled to move Van Every to third. He would score two batters later on a ground out to second by Chris Carter.

Joe Thurston (2 for 4) joined Van Every in collecting two hits. Oscar Salazar had two hits for the Tides.

Penn through 3 2/3 innings giving up one run on three hits. Ryan Bukvich and Kameron Micholio came on to pitch 5 1/3 scoreless ball. Miller took the loss.

The PawSox win brought to an end Norfolk's eight game winning streak. The two teams wrap-up their four game series, and head into the All-Star break tomorrow night (6:15 pm). Charlie Zink (10-2) takes the mound for the PawSox. He'll face Craig Anderson (2-7) for the Tides.
