Ortiz Homers Again, But PawSox Fall to Mud Hens

PAWTUCKET- David Ortiz hit his third homer in as many rehab starts, but it was not enough as the PawSox fell to the Toledo Mud Hens, 13-5 tonight before another packed house at McCoy.

Ortiz’ solo shot came in the bottom of the third on a 3-1 pitch off Toledo starter Chris Lambert. Lambert tried to force a fastball in on Ortiz, but he was able to turn on the pitch and launch it mid-way off the Met Life sign located just past the right field picnic area.

“It looked like to me that he is getting more and more in time” said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson or Ortiz' performance, “It was very comfortable”

Ortiz finished the night 1 for 4. He fouled out to first in the first, struck out on a fouled tip in the fifth and was called out on a check swing strike in the seventh. His seventh inning strikeout came against Toledo lefty Clay Rapada, the first southpaw Ortiz has faced during his rehab.

Ortiz, who left the stadium after he was replaced in the eighth, will not play in tomorrow’s game as previously reported. He is scheduled to continue his rehab in Portland for the Sea Dogs beginning Monday.

PawSox starter Charlie Zink (11-3) did not have his A-game tonight. He pitched only 1 1/3 innings and gave up 9 Toledo runs on 8 hits. His ERA rose from 2.22 to 2.83.

“He just didn’t have it tonight” said Johnson, “Charlie Zink is 11-3. those days are gonna happen.”

The Mud Hens teed-off on Zink with four runs in the first. With one out Toledo got three consecutive singles from Michael Hollimon, Timo Perez, and Brent Cleveln to force in one run. Two batters later Erik Almonte drove a Zink knuckleball over the left field wall for a three run homer.

The Hens scored five more off Zink in the second on an RBI single by Derek Wathan and a grand slam to deep right by Clete Thomas.

Jose Vaquedano pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief of Zink. Lincoln Holdzkom followed Vaquedano and gave up two runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work. Michael Tejera gave up one run in 1 1/3 innings on the mound. Eric Hull piched a scoreless ninth.

The PawSox scored their first two runs off Lambert in the second. With two on and one out Gil Velazquez hit a sharp grounder that was fielded by first baseman Derek Wathan. He got the front end of what would have been a double play at second but Lambert could not handle the return throw to first, plating in a run. Jonathan Van Every followed with a RBI double to right.

George Kottaras drove in Pawtucket’s fourth run in the fifth with a two out RBI single to center off Lambert. He added a solo homer ( his 18th of the season) off reliever Clay Rapada in the seventh for the fifth PawSox run. Kottaras had a solid night at the plate finishing the game by going 3 for 4 with a walk and two RBI’s.

Lambert (10-5) left the game after throwing six innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

Every member of the Toledo starting nine had at least one hit. Thomas (5 RBI) and Wathan had three hits while Almonte (3 RBI), Perez and Freddie Guzman collected two apiece.

The finale of the four game series with the Mud Hens is tomorrow afternoon (1:05 pm). RHP Yorman Bazardo (3-5, 6.28 ERA) starts for Toledo. He’ll be opposed by RHP David Pauley (11-2, 3.24 ERA) for the PawSox.

NOTES: Not only has the media coverage of Ortiz’ rehab lessened, so too have the number of fans coming through the turnstiles at McCoy. Tonight’s sell out crowd of 10,675 was the smallest crowd so far this homestand. Blame it on the heat.
PawSox starter Kyle Snyder appears to have suffered another setback in his comeback from a groin strain. He was forced to leave his rehab start earlier this week in Lowell. No definitive word on his condition or a timetable for his return.
