PawSox Fall to Chiefs 4-2

The PawSox grounded into four double plays this afternoon, losing game two of their three game set to the Syracuse Chiefs 4-2.

Pawtucket fell behind early in this game 2-0 but tied the score on an RBI single by Gil Velazquez in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth by Brian Pritz. The PawSox had many opportunities to score, but hit into double plays to quell rallies in the first, second, seventh, and ninth innings.

The Chiefs' Chip Cannon broke-up the tie in the seventh on a hard single to left, scoring Russ Adams. Syracuse received an insurance run one inning later on an RBI single by Wayne Lydon.

PawSox lefty Abe Alvarez (1-1) took the loss in relief. Syracuse reliever Tracy Thorpe (1-0) picked up the win.

Both starters had solid outings. PawSox knuckleballer Charlie Zink threw six innings giving up 2 runs on 9 hits, many of which were not very hard hit. He struck out three and walked no one. Bill Murphy for Syracuse pitched 5 2/3 innings, also giving up two runs on seven hits.

Cannon ended the game going 3 for 5 with a solo homer in the fifth. Lydon also had 3 hits in 5 at bats. The PawSox got two hist apiece from Jeff bailey and Chad Spann. Keith Ginter saw his hit streak end at 6 games, going 0 for 3 today.

The finale of the three game set is tomorrow night (7:05pm) as the PawSox welcome Mike Lowell to McCoy on a rehab assignment. The pitching match-up will feature RHP Kane Davis (2-1, 2.78) for Syracuse and RHP Chris Smith (0-2, 2.40) for Pawtucket.
