The Pawtucket Red Sox combined timely hitting and strong pitching to defeat the Rochester Red Wings, 4-2, this afternoon in the final game of their three game set at Frontier Field.

The PawSox were able to open up a 4-0 lead on a Chad Spann sacrifice fly in the second, a two run homer by Jeff Bailey in the third, and a Keith Ginter double in the fifth. Ginter ended the game going 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles.

The Red Wings had a chance to score more than two runs in the sixth off Zink. With runners on second and third and one out and one run in, OF Jason Pridie made a poor base running decision in trying to score from third on a grounder back to Zink. 2B Howie Clark then drove in Rochester's second run with a single. Zink retired DH Randy Ruiz on a fly out to right to end the threat.

RHP Chris Smith came in to pitch the final three innings for Pawtucket to pick-up his first save of the season.

Game 27- PawSox vs. Red Wings, April 30, 2008

The PawSox hope to end the opening month of the season on a high note as they wrap up their three game series with the Rochester Red Wings this afternoon (12:05pm) in Rochester. RHP Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.09) takes the hill for Pawtucket against LHP Francisco Liriano (0-0, 6.75) for the Red Wings.

Here are some brief notes leading up to the game...

Pawtucket Red Sox (14-12)

Zink is coming off another solid outing, a no-decision April 24th against Syracuse. He pitched six innings, giving up only two runs on nine hits.

The PawSox bullpen is looking to rebound after giving up seven runs last night.

Jeff Bailey has been on a tear of late at the plate. he has a hit in 6 of his last 7 games and has raised his average to .292 after last night's 2 for 4 performance.

Rochester Red Wings (13-13)

Liriano will make his second start of the season for the Red Wings. The one-time Twins star lefty has been shaky in his three starts this season with the big club. He lost all three decisions with an ERA of 11.32. His lone Rochester start came on April 8th. He did not get the decision in the Red Wings' 6-5 win over Norfolk. He pitched 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.

IF Randy Ruiz is working a seven game hitting streak. Over that time he is hitting .429 with 5 doubles, a triple, a homer, and 10 RBI's.

It's a safe bet that if you can get by the eighth inning unscathed with Rochester, you are in line for success. The Red Wings have out-scored opponents 24-2 in eighth inning so far this season, including 4 runs off the PawSox last night.

Toledo starter Eddie Bonine is now a perfect 5-0 as the Mud Hens beat the Louisville Bats 4-3. BOX

PawSox Relievers Fail to Hold Off Red Wings

The usually solid PawSox relief corps could not hold down the fort, giving up seven runs late as Pawtucket fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 9-3, last night at Frontier Field.

The PawSox were cruising along behind starter Michael Tejera, who left the game with one out in the sixth with a 3-2 lead. The Red Wings scored seven times in the seventh and eight off relievers Eric Hull, Craig Hansen, and Lincoln Holdzkom.

Throughout their barrage, the Red Wings only collected one extra base hit, a two run triple in the eighth by RF Darnell McDonald off Holdzkom. Rochester's three runs in the seventh scored on four singles and two sacrifice flies. Those runs were charged to Hull.

Hansen gave up his first three runs of the season in the eighth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a stolen base. Holdzkom's run also came on a single.

In the early goings of this game it looked like the PawSox were well in command. They scored all three runs in the first on a bases loaded wild pitch by Rochester starter Brian Duensing, a based loaded double play off the bat of Chris Carter, and a single by Keith Ginter. The PawSox scattered hits the rest of the way.

Tejera gave up two runs on six hits striking out five and walking two. Hull (1-2) took the loss in relief.

Duensing settled down after the shaky first, pitching six innings giving up seven hits and striking our four. Reliever Phil Humber (1-3) picked up the win, pitching a scoreless seventh.

The two teams wrap up their three game series this afternoon (12:05pm) as RHP Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.09) throws for Pawtucket against LHP Francisco Liriano (0-0, 6.75) for Rochester.

Lowell Helps PawSox Beat the Chiefs 6-1

PAWTUCKET- Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell began his rehab assignment with the PawSox by driving in two runs as Pawtucket beat the Syracuse Chiefs, 6-1, in the finale of a three game series Friday night at McCoy.

As the PawSox DH in his first action since being placed on the disabled list with a sore left thumb, Lowell finished the game going 1 for 5. He drove in two runs on a bases loaded single in the second. He had a broken bat pop-up to short in the first, lined out to center in the fifth, fouled out to third in the sixth, a popped out to second in the eighth.

After his outing Lowell said his thumb felt fine.

“I was actually happy,” said Lowell, “Overall I can’t think of anything negative, so that’s good.”

“How exciting was that when he came up with the bases loaded” said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson, “I got a guy with 120 RBIs coming up with the bases loaded. He didn’t let us down.”

“He’s such a great example for everybody. This guy’s the ultimate professional.”

Lowell is slated to play third base Saturday night when the PawSox open a three game series in Buffalo.

The PawSox got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring four times. Chris Carter and Keith Ginter led off with singles. After Jeff Bailey popped up to first, Gil Velazquez blooped what appeared to be a single to right. However it turned into a fielder’s choice as Ginter was forced at second. Carter did score on the play.

Velasquez then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Jonathan Van Every walked, Joe Thurston singled to left to drive in Velazquez.. George Kottaras walked to load the bases. Lowell followed by drilling a 3-1 pitch to center to score Van Every and Thurston. Kottaras was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Van Every gave the PawSox a 5-0 with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the fourth.

The PawSox offense added to their lead in the fifth. With one out, Brandon Moss singled off Chiefs’ pitcher Mike MacDonald. He then stole second and scored on a double by Carter.

Chris Smith (1-2) earned his first win of the season for Pawtucket, pitching six scoreless innings and giving up only one hit. His only blemish came in the fifth inning. He gave up a single to C Curtis Thigpen and walked 1B Chris Cannon to start the frame. He then settled down, getting a pair of fly outs and a ground out to end the threat. His ERA dropped to 1.71.

“The innings were going by so quick, it was a matter of coming in and I had to put my helmet on and get back out to third”, Johnson said of Smith’s efficiency. “He was really locked in. A very impressive performance.”

The Chiefs scored their only run in the eighth off PawSox reliever Edgar Martinez. LF Eric Nielsen tripled to right and scored on a ground out by Pedro Lopez. The PawSox staff limited Syracuse to only two hits.

“Any time you get two guys to give up only two hits against Syracuse, that’s pretty good” said Johnson.
Syracuse starter Kane Davis had a rough outing, lasting only three innings, giving up four runs and taking the loss.

Pawtucket fell behind early in this game 2-0 but tied the score on an RBI single by Gil Velazquez in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth by Brian Pritz. The PawSox had many opportunities to score, but hit into double plays to quell rallies in the first, second, seventh, and ninth innings.

The Chiefs' Chip Cannon broke-up the tie in the seventh on a hard single to left, scoring Russ Adams. Syracuse received an insurance run one inning later on an RBI single by Wayne Lydon.

PawSox lefty Abe Alvarez (1-1) took the loss in relief. Syracuse reliever Tracy Thorpe (1-0) picked up the win.

Both starters had solid outings. PawSox knuckleballer Charlie Zink threw six innings giving up 2 runs on 9 hits, many of which were not very hard hit. He struck out three and walked no one. Bill Murphy for Syracuse pitched 5 2/3 innings, also giving up two runs on seven hits.

Cannon ended the game going 3 for 5 with a solo homer in the fifth. Lydon also had 3 hits in 5 at bats. The PawSox got two hist apiece from Jeff bailey and Chad Spann. Keith Ginter saw his hit streak end at 6 games, going 0 for 3 today.

The finale of the three game set is tomorrow night (7:05pm) as the PawSox welcome Mike Lowell to McCoy on a rehab assignment. The pitching match-up will feature RHP Kane Davis (2-1, 2.78) for Syracuse and RHP Chris Smith (0-2, 2.40) for Pawtucket.

Game 21- Chiefs vs. PawSox, April 24, 2008

The PawSox can extend their winning streak to four if they're able to get past the Syracuse Chiefs in an afternoon contest (12:05pm) today at McCoy. The Cheifs will send LHP Bill Murphy (2-1, 2.55) to the mound. He'll be opposed by RHP Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.12) for Pawtucket.

I will not be at the game today. Here are some brief pre-game notes...

Syracuse Chiefs (13-8)

Murphy makes his third start of the 2008 season. In his last outing Murphy picked up the decision in the Chief's 9-7 victory over the Buffalo Bisons. In that game he pitched six innings, giving up three runs on five hits.

Remarkably, 11 of the Chiefs first 21 games have been played in the afternoon. And they like the sunshine, amassing a 10-1 record in day games this season. They are also undefeated (2-0) on the road after a loss.

Pawtucket Red Sox (12-8)

The PawSox enter the game a half game behind the Chiefs for second place in the IL North and 1.5 games behind Scranton Wilkes/Barre for the division lead.

Zink enters the game as the IL's Pitcher of the Week last week. Over his last three outings Zink is 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA. His loss came during his first start of the season April 5th against Indianapolis. (3IP, 4H, 5ER).

Keith Ginter is riding a hot bat for Pawtucket. He enters the game with a six game hitting streak, over which he is hitting .375 with two homers and 3 RBI.

David Pauley has been added back to the PawSox roster. He was a last minute starter for the Red Sox Tuesday in place of the ailing Josh Beckett. RP Craig Hansen has also been optioned back to Pawtucket but will not be added to the roster before Saturday.

Here is a rundown of the rest of the action from the International League yesterday...

You have to feel some compassion for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. They lost their 8th game in a row last night and are winless on the road this season (0-13) after falling to Rochester 5-3. BOX

The Toledo Mud Hens scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a 4-1 win over the Columbus Clippers. BOX

The Louisville Bats scored 7 runs early in the game, but still barely held on to beat the Indianapolis Indians 7-5. The Bats now sit alone atop the IL West. BOX

The Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees broke up a tie in the bottom of the ninth, on a walk-off home run by Brett Gardner, 6-5 over Buffalo. BOX

The Charlotte Knights scored at least one run in six innings on their way to an 11-2 rout of the Durham Buls. BOX

It took 14 innings before the Norfolk Tides broke through to edge the Richmond Braves 8-7. BOX

PawSox Edge Chiefs 3-1

The PawSox once again received timely hitting and solid pitching in defeating the Syracuse Chiefs, 3-1 last night at McCoy. The win was the third in a row for Pawtucket and snapped the Chief's 8-game winning streak.

The PawSox got all the runs they really needed in the bottom of the second inning on a two run double by Gil Velazquez. The other PawSox run came in the fifth on a solo home run by George Kottaras, his sixth of the season.

Even though the PawSox pitching staff has been shaken up by roster moves in recent days, they came through in a big way last night. Lefty Michael Tejera started, pitched 6 innings, giving up the Chiefs' only run (an Eric Nielson home run) and earned the win. The final three innings were completed by a combination of Eric Hull, newcomer Bryan Corey, Jon Switzer, and Lee Gronkiewicz. Gronkiewicz pitched a perfect ninth to secure his fourth save of the season.

Off the field RP Craig Hansen, called up earlier in the day to Boston, has been sent back to the PawSox. He was the losing pitcher in last night's 6-4 loss to the Angels.

With the flu ravaging through the Boston clubhouse, young prospect Justin Masterson is expected to make his Major League debut today for the Red Sox. He has been called up to pitch for Jon Lester, who was pressed into service last night for the ailing Daisuke Matsuzaka.

The PawSox announced that OF Bobby Kielty will be sidelined at least another four to six weeks after undergoing hand surgery. He experienced soreness in his left hand during the PawSox' recent road trip. IF Jeff Natale, placed on the DL Tuesday after being hit by a pitch resulting is a fracture of his left arm, is also expected to face surgery next week.

Game Two of the three game set with the Chiefs happens this afternoon (12:05pm) as LHP Bill Murphy (2-1, 2.55) goes for Syracuse against the PawSox' Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.12).

Game 20- Chiefs vs. PawSox, April 23, 2008

The PawSox were off yesterday so it's back to work tonight (6:15pm) as they open up a three game set with the Syracuse Chiefs at McCoy. It will be a pair of left handers going as the Chiefs send out David Purcey (2-0, 1.89) against Michael Tejera (0-2, 5.74) for the PawSox.

Some notes of note...

Syracuse Chiefs (13-7)

The Chiefs are on an 8-game winning streak entering tonight's game. They are coming off a pair of 4-game sweeps over Buffalo and Lehigh Valley. They currently share the top spot in the IL North with the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees.

Purcey returns to the Chiefs after making his Major League debut last week for Toronto. He earned a no-decision against the Tigers, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits. He walked seven and struck out three. His last work for the Chiefs was ten days ago, a win over the Rochester Red Wings.

The Chiefs are coming off their most prolific offensive game of the young season. They set season highs in runs (13), hits (14) and singles (13)
in their 13-6 win over the Iron Pigs.

OF Adam Lind is the Chiefs' leading hitter, entering the game batting .379 (4th in the IL) and tied with the PawSox George Kottaras for the league lead in RBI's (160

The Chiefs have had success early in games. nearly half of their runs this season have come in the first three innings of ball games.

Pawtucket Red Sox (11-8)

The big news for Pawtucket is that RP Craig Hansen has been called up to Boston to fill the roster spot left vacant by the departure of David Pauley. Hansen has been flawless so far this season, pitching 12 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Pauley was optioned back to Pawtucket following last night's fill-in start for the ailing Josh Beckett.

Tejera is coming off a lost his last time out against Indianapolis. He went 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Two of those hits were homers.

Jonathan Van Every continues to be consistent at the plate. His batting average is up to .333 (tied for 8th in the IL) after his two hit performance Monday afternoon against Buffalo.

Keith Ginter has a five game hitting streak working after going 3 for 4 on Monday.

I'm not at the game tonight. I'm sure there will be more roster moves before game time. When I know...you'll know. It should be a beautiful night for baseball. Enjoy.

Pauley Unimpressive, Sent Back to PawSox

According to this piece in the ProJo, David Pauley's stint in Boston is one and done. Pauley, called up to make a start in place of the ailing Josh Beckett, pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up five runs on seven hits. He struck out 3 and walked 2.

The article goes on to say that the Sox will wait to see who they will bring up to fill the open roster spot. A lot rides on the health of Jason Varitek, who has been sidelined with the flu. If he remains ill, either George Kottaras or Dusty Brown could see a short trip up north. If Varitek can play, the Sox may go with an outfielder.

Game Wraps, April 22, 2008

Even though the PawSox enjoyed a day off, it was still a busy day around the International League yesterday...

The Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees left 13 men on base in their 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Bisons yesterday. BOX

It took 11 innings for the Durham Bulls to edge the Charlotte Knights , 3-2 BOX

Natale on DL, Reza Called Up

The PawSox placed IF Jeff Natale on the disabled list today with a broken left arm. He suffered the injury in yesterday's 6-5 win over the Buffalo Bisons. Natale was hit by a pitch from the Bisons' Edward Mujica.

According to Sox Prospects, Greenville IF Aaron Reza has been called up to Pawtucket.

In other news, RHP Bryan Corey cleared waivers and has accepted an assignment with the PawSox.

Pauley Called Up to Boston, Thurston Sent Down

David Pauley was scratched form his start Sunday in anticipation of being called up to Boston to pitch in place of Clay Buchholz who was suffering from the flu. Well Pauley did get called up, but it wasn't to spell Buchholz.

The PawSox right hander will be starting for Boston tonight in place of Josh Beckett, who was a last minute scratch due to stiffness in his neck.

To make room for Pauley the Sox sent IF/OF Joe Thurston back to Pawtucket.

Natale on the Shelf

According to Portland Press Herald, IF Jeff Natale suffered a broken arm in yesterday's game against the Buffalo Bisons. He was struck on the arm in the bottom of the seventh on a pitch by Edward Mujica. He finished the inning on the bases but was replaced by Chad Spann to begin the eighth.

More than likely Natale will be placed on the DL. It's unclear who would take his place on the PawSox roster.

It was a light schedule across the International League yesterday....

Post Game News and Notes- April 21, 2008

Here are some other notes from today’s match-up with the Bisons:

MOUND MAGICIAN

Craig Hansen continues his mastery on the mound. He has now pitched 12 1/3 innings without giving up a run this season. He pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief today, striking out two and walking one.

ZINK HONORED

PawSox starter Charlie Zink was named the International League Pitcher of the Week.

Zink was 2-0 last week with a 0.90 ERA. In ten innings of work the knuckleballer gave up only one run on six hits while walking three and striking out eight.

NO WORRIES ON SNYDER

Through two appearances Kyle Snyder has pitched a total of 6 1/3 innings this season and has given up three homers. His ERA rose to 7.44. But that’s no big deal to PawSox Manager Ron Johnson.

“You’ve got to give him a break,” said Johnson, “He’s been down for a while. I don’t worry about Kyle Snyder. He knows how to pitch.”

VAN EVERY DELIVERS AT THE PLATE AND IN THE FIELD

Two hits and two RBI's wasn't the only highlight from Jonathan Van Every's day. He also made a sliding, diving grab of a ball hit to right center field off the bat of Bisons' DH Ryan Mulhern to save a run in the eighth.

"He’s as good a center fielder as I've seen" said Johnson, "He makes makes the above average plays without diving."

Johnson said if Van Every can gain some confidence he can become a special player.

OFF DAY A WELCOMED BREAK

In the minor leagues, days off are few and far between. Tomorrow’s break is the first of the season for Pawtucket, and their last until May 21st. And it didn’t come soon enough.

“This ball club’s tired” said Johnson, “It’s good to have a day off then get right back at it.”

The PawSox bullpen has been stretched to the limit and it almost became an issue today. Johnson said Lincoln Holdzkom (today’s winner) was the last pitcher available and could have possibly pitched one more inning. After that, who knows who would have had to come in to throw. Good thing the PawSox didn’t have to find out.

NATALE TAKES ONE FOR THE TEAM

2B Jeff Natale left the game in the eighth inning after being hit by a pitch off his left arm. He was replaced by Chad Spann. No word on his condition was available immediately after the game.

BUFFALO PEDIGREE

The Bisons have many players on their roster with big league experience.

Josh Barfield played in 130 games for the Indians last season, batting .243 with 3 homers and 50 RBI. He was relegated to back-up status late in the season with the emergence of 2B Asdrubal Cabrera. He spent 2006 with the Padres.

Jason Tyner spent his 2007 season with the Minnesota Twins. He batted .286 with 1 homer and 22 RBIs in 114 games. He was signed by the Indians as a free agent on February 21st. Tyner has also spent time with the Rays and Mets..

RHP Scott Elarton has nine years of service in the majors. A one-time 17 game winner for the Astros, Elarton has also pitched for Colorado, Cleveland, and Kansas City. He signed as a free agent with the Indians last August.

3B Aaron Herr is the son of firmer major leaguer Tom Herr. The elder Herr spent 13 seasons in the big leagues, most notably with the St. Louis Cardinals. He also spent time with the Twins, Phillies, Mets, and Giants. He was a member of the 1982 Cardinals World Series team.

Also on the Buffalo roster, but currently on the DL, is former Sox reliever Brandon Donnelly.

WHY PLAY NINE WHEN SIX WILL DO

You can usually figure out how the PawSox will fare based on their play through six innings. After today’s win the PawSox are now 2-8 when trailing after six. Conversely they are 8-0 when they start the seventh with a lead.
